SVSU moving ahead with presidential search

A mid Michigan university agreed upon the first steps in its search for a new president.

Eric Gilbertson, President of Saginaw Valley State University for 24 years, announced his plans to retire earlier this summer.

Last week, the Presidential Search Advisory committee at SVSU, held its first meeting.

Committee Chair David Abbs said the university hopes the vacancy will attract a broad and diverse group of candidates.

“We think it’s very attractive. SVSU has evolved considerably over the last 24 years. We think it brings a lot to the region and to the state. And also, I think, given the university structure in the state of Michigan, I would think we would attract candidates from not just within Michigan, but nationally as well,”

Abbs said the committee plans to meet again in October or November.

Gilbertson will remain as the president of the university until his replacement is found.

The process is expected to be complete by Spring 2014.
